MEDIA NOTES
Published July 7, 1998
PERSONALITIES: TSN decided "not to renew" the contract
of Brendan Connor, who served as an anchor on NBA broadcasts
on the net for the past six years (Toronto GLOBE & MAIL,
7/3)....Brian Wheeler was named the Blazers' new radio play-
by-play voice, replacing Bill Schonely, who called Blazers'
games for 28 years. Wheeler is currently the voice of the
WNBA Monarchs (Portland OREGONIAN, 7/3).
RADIO DAYS: The Redskins "are likely to announce" a new
three-year deal in the next 10 days with WJFK-FM to continue
as the team's rights holder and flagship station. WJFK
"likely will pay about" $5M a year for the deal (WASHINGTON
POST, 7/5)....Ottawa Sports Radio announced a deal to carry
Blue Jays games through 2000. The station, which also owns
Senators rights, launches in September (OTTAWA SUN, 7/7).
NOTES: SI "is slashing" its cover price 16%, or $0.55,
to $2.95. The drop puts SI's price $0.04 below ESPN
Magazine, and rolls back the price hike it instituted two
years ago (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 7/3)....ESPN's 2Q '98 ratings,
which included the World Cup, MLB and the NHL playoffs, were
up 18% from 1Q '98, from a 1.08 to a 1.27 (ESPN).
