MARKETPLACE ROUND-UP
Published July 7, 1998
CARD CARRIER: MBNA has scored an NFL "hat trick of
sorts," as the credit card issuer has landed the league's
Quarterback Club cartel of marquee players, plus a separate
deal which gives it the right to the remaining players
marketed by Players Inc., the NFLPA's promotional arm,
according to Terry Lefton of BRANDWEEK. Those deals are in
addition to MBNA's corporate deal with the NFL, which runs
through 2004. Under its QB Club pact, MBNA is "expected" to
issue cards, "likely Visa," later this year which will bear
the likenesses of Brett Favre, John Elway, Steve Young and
"one other top QB" (Terry Lefton, BRANDWEEK, 7/6 issue).
DEALS: EA Sports has signed Celtics F Antoine Walker to
assist in the design of its NBA LIVE 99, scheduled to ship
later this year. Walker joins Spurs C Tim Duncan, Heat G
Tim Hardaway and Wizards F Juwan Howard in EA Sports' NBA
lineup (EA Sports)....NationsBank has signed on as the title
sponsor of the Blues-Predators exhibition game, September 26
at Kemper Arena in K.C. The game will be officially called
the NationsBank NHL Faceoff (K.C. STAR, 7/3).
