IS HUIZENGA'S SMILEY-ING FACE THE LOOK OF FRUSTRATION?
Published July 7, 1998
Marlins Owner Wayne Huizenga, "apparently frustrated by
club president Don Smiley's inability to complete his
purchase of the team," said he is giving Smiley "a final
deadline of two weeks to raise the money," according to
Barry Jackson of the MIAMI HERALD. Huizenga also said that
he is "willing to consider offers that don't include
Smiley." Jackson reports that Smiley "is still short" of
Huizenga's $169M asking price, and that as of last month,
Smiley had only about $130M in "firm commitments." If
Smiley can reach $150-155M, "Huizenga probably would be
willing to keep a minority stake" (MIAMI HERALD, 7/7).
