FRANCHISE NOTES

          In N.Y., Steve Popper reported that the change in Nets
     ownership does not "seem likely to change [Nets coach John]
     Calipari's statement that he will not exercise an escape
     clause after the coming season" (N.Y. TIMES, 7/5)....Oakland
     Mayor Elihu Harris said that "at least two ... unnamed
     groups" have expressed interest in buying the A's (Matier &
     Ross, S.F. CHRONICLE, 7/6).
