WHILE GOODWILL NUMBERS UP ON TBS, CBS SEES DROP OFF FROM '94

As the Goodwill Games entered its second week
yesterday, TBS's ratings "remained well above" those for the
'94 Games, but CBS's weekend numbers "were significantly
lower than four years ago," according to Steve Zipay of
NEWSDAY. Buoyed by Sunday night's 1.9 cable rating -- the
highest of the Games so far -- TBS's average rating for the
first eight prime-time telecasts was a 1.6, 33% higher than
the 1.2 rating for the same period in '94. TBS estimates
that "about" 1.2 million homes are tuning into the games
nightly. But CBS's ratings were "down sharply" from ABC's
weekend action in '94. CBS, which carried two hours of
competition on Saturday afternoon and two hours on Sunday,
registered a 1.9 overnight on Saturday and a 2.1 on Sunday.
In '94, based on 37 large markets, ABC scored a 3.0
overnight for Saturday and a 2.9 for Sunday (NEWSDAY, 7/29).
