THE CALIFORNIA GOLD RUSH: A "MAD SCRAMBLE" TO BUY 49ERS?

          Now that Carmen Policy has resigned as 49ers President,
     "don't bet against the team being sold, a knowledgeable
     insider" tells Matier & Ross of the S.F. CHRONICLE.  The 
     source said that outside groups from L.A. and elsewhere are
     already in a "mad scramble" to put together an investment
     group "in the event" that 49ers co-Owner Eddie DeBartolo's
     "legal troubles force the team onto the auction block." 
     Matier & Ross add that while 49ers co-Owner Denise DeBartolo
     York "had promised not to sell the 49ers out from under her
     brother ... as long as he was still trying to work out his
     legal problems" in LA, sources say that promise "was good
     only for one year" (Matier & Ross, S.F. CHRONICLE, 7/29).
