CAMPBELL TO BE NAMED TO NHL POST, WANTS FIGHTING STOPPED

          Things "are about to change significantly" at the NHL 
     league office, where former Rangers coach Colin Campbell
     will become the new NHL Senior VP & Dir of Hockey Operations
     "before week's end," according to Marty York of the Toronto
     GLOBE & MAIL.  Campbell replaces Brian Burke, who left the
     position to become GM of the Canucks.  York reports that
     Campbell, who said he will surround himself with former
     coaches and players in his new position, plans to
     "[r]ecommend major and potentially controversial steps that
     he thinks might reduce or perhaps even end fighting in the
     NHL."  Campbell also plans to have "beer-drinking sessions"
     with media members.  Campbell: "Some of the people who
     report on hockey have been around the game for a long time
     and really know what they're talking about.  I want to hear
     what they think about the rules, what they think should
     change and what shouldn't" (Marty York, GLOBE & MAIL, 7/15).
