New Vikings Owner Red McCombs wants to bring Seahawks
QB Warren Moon "into the front office after his playing days
are over," according to ESPN's John Clayton. Clayton
reported that Moon "is also helping Houston businessman Bob
McNair's push for an expansion team and wouldn't mind being
an investor" ("SportsCenter," ESPN, 7/14). In St. Paul, Tom
Powers writes on McCombs, noting, "After the Tom Clancy
fiasco, the owners should have discontinued talks with out-
of-state buyers and sold to a local entity. Glen Taylor's
group would have been fine. But the greed thing got in the
way. ... McCombs insists he'll do right by the community.
We'd love to take him at his word. The problem is that we
don't even know the guy" (PIONEER PRESS, 7/15).
TEAM POLICY: 49ers President Carmen Policy, on the
team's ownership battle, and his position with the
franchise: "[T]he future has yet to be determined, both for
me and for the 49ers as far as the form of management
that's going to prevail. If the DeBartolo Corporation [run
by Denise DeBartolo York,] continues to own the team and is
making decisions related to management, they'll be
interested in my staying on. If Eddie [DeBartolo] owns the
team, I will not be a part of the 49ers" (WASH. POST, 7/15).
