CFL'S FUN POLICE: WEAR STARTER OR ADIDAS OR ELSE BE REMOVED!
Published July 10, 1998
CFL President Jeff Giles "is threatening to have
players and coaches forcibly removed from games if they
continue to wear Nike products" during league action,
according to Marty York of the Toronto GLOBE & MAIL. Giles
became "irate" over what he called "malicious defiance" of
the CFL dress code, after Winnipeg backup QB Chris Vargas
"spent most" of Wednesday's game "wearing a Nike hat."
Giles said he will assign officials to CFL stadiums for the
rest of the year to ensure that coaches and players "wear
only" Starter or adidas league-sanctioned apparel. Vitalis
Gomes, Nike's CFL Marketing Supervisor, said that some CFL
players and coaches have had personal deals with Nike for
many years "and have no intention of ending them. ... These
[CFL] stars have stayed loyal to us, so I think this whole
thing could backfire on the league" (GLOBE & MAIL, 7/10).
