KASH 'N KERRY: THE STRIKEOUT KID'S PACKING THEM IN

Since Cubs rookie P Kerry Wood struck out 20 Astros on
May 6, he has been one of the biggest draws in MLB. THE
DAILY tracked all 10 of his starts in '98, both before the
20-strikeout game and after. In his five starts since the
20-strikeout performance, a case can be made that Wood has
brought 42,519 more fans to the ballpark, for an average of
8,504 more per game, compared to the home team's average
attendance at the time of each start (THE DAILY).
NOTES: As of Wood's 20-K game, 129,800 fans had
attended his first five starts, an average of 25,960. Since
the record-setting performance, 189,750 fans have attended
his last five starts, an average of 37,950 -- up 11,990 per
start....The May 6 game in which Wood struck out 20 batters
was the Cubs' smallest home crowd of the season....While
yesterday's game was below the season average, it saw a
boost of 5,184 from the Wednesday afternoon 20-K game....The
May 23 game at Atlanta was the largest crowd in Turner Field
history, and the 8th-largest in Braves history (THE DAILY).
