THE TRAGIC HOUR? JOHNSON/PRODUCERS GO BACK TO DRAWING BOARD

MAGIC JOHNSON and the producers of "The Magic Show" are
"altering their game plan" after facing a "torrent of fierce
criticisms since its June 8 debut," according to Greg
Braxton of the L.A. TIMES. The show will reduce the role of
Johnson's sidekick CRAIG SHOEMAKER and increase the
"interaction" with Johnson and musical leader SHEILA E.
Johnson said that he is "getting over his awkwardness and
plans to be more spontaneous and relaxed with his hosting
duties." He said he will now go out to "have some fun."
Twentieth TV President RICK JACOBSON, which produces and
distributes the show, "reaffirmed his commitment" to the
program (L.A. TIMES, 6/26). Producers are also doing away
with Johnson's opening monologue (WASHINGTON POST, 6/27).
