WARRIORS LAND 2000 ALL-STAR GAME ON STERN'S BAY-WATCH

NBA Commissioner David Stern was in Oakland to award
the 50th NBA All-Star Game to the Warriors to be played in
February of 2000, according to David Steele of the S.F.
CHRONICLE. Stern: "I think that this, together with the
draft, demonstrated that this is a franchise that's starting
to move in the right direction after having a difficult
time." At Tuesday's draft, Antawn Jamison became the latest
member of the Warriors. The game will be played at Oakland
Arena, which opened last November after a $140M renovation.
Stern said that venues for the weekend's ancillary events
"are still to be determined," and while most will be held in
Oakland, "a few might be held in San Francisco." Steele
reports that Boston, Portland, Washington and Seattle were
all "in the running" for the 2000 game (S.F. CHRONICLE,
6/26). Rick Burton, Dir of the Warsaw Sports Marketing
Program at the Univ. of OR, estimated the All-Star Weekend
could pump $150-250M into the Bay Area economy, based on his
research of other events (OAKLAND TRIBUNE, 6/25).
