WHAT'S IN THE CARDS IN AZ? TEAM EYES NOVEMBER REFERENDUM
Published June 22, 1998
NFL Cardinals VP & General Counsel Michael Bidwill said
the team isn't "thinking about plans beyond this November,"
when voters in Mesa and Tempe could be asked to consider a
quarter-cent sales tax that would help fund portions of a
$1.5B development project, which includes a $299M, 67,000-
seat retractable-roof stadium for the team, according to
Kent Somers of the ARIZONA REPUBLIC. The Cardinals will
contribute $75M toward construction, and also have agreed to
pay $50M over 25 years to cover game-day operating costs.
In addition, the team will invest $75M in other parts of the
development, including retail shops and hotels. Bidwill
noted that in the past three years, 13 of 15 referendums on
sports facilities throughout the country have been approved
by voters: "And many of them had far less contributions than
the team has committed to today" (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 6/21).
