WITH ELWAY BEHIND CENTER, BRONCOS STADIUM OUTLOOK IMPROVES
Published June 2, 1998
During a news conference announcing his plans to play another year, Broncos QB John Elway said that he "will support" the team's campaign for a new stadium, according to Schefter & Lowe of the DENVER POST. But Elway added that he decided to play to be "competitive on the football field, not on the campaign trail." Elway: "I think [Broncos Owner Pat] Bowlen and the Broncos deserve a new stadium. I've said that all along. ... But that's not why I came back." Voters will go to the polls in November, and Bowlen said he was unsure what impact Elway's return would have on the stadium vote: "If we're winning and John is playing, it probably has some impact [on the stadium campaign]. I don't know how much; I'm not that smart" (DENVER POST, 6/2).
