CARDINALS PLEDGE $50M FOR STADIUM, BUT IT MAY NOT BE ENOUGH

The NFL Cardinals "plan to kick in at least" $50M
toward building the proposed $1B East Valley convention and
sports complex that would serve as their new home, according
to Petrie & Gonderinger of the ARIZONA REPUBLIC. The team's
contribution, confirmed yesterday by Mesa officials, would
be part of the $650M needed to build the domed stadium part
of the project. Mesa Mayor Wayne Brown said that the offer
"may not be enough to make palatable to Mesa and Tempe
taxpayers, who would be asked to approve a quarter-cent
sales tax increase in November to help pay for the complex."
Attached to the stadium would be a 500,000-square-foot
convention center large enough to handle national political
conventions, two 18-hole golf courses, 2 million square feet
of office space, a 1,200-room hotel, luxury condominiums and
single family homes (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 6/17).
