Published May 27, 1998
Police "rounded up 88 Islamic militants in raids across
Europe yesterday, saying they had evidence of a terrorist
campaign timed to the upcoming World Cup," according to Ian
Phillips of the AP. Raids took place in France, Belgium,
Italy, Germany and Switzerland. Interior Minister Jean-
Pierre Chevenement said that investigators "had evidence of
plots to attack during the World Cup" (TORONTO STAR, 5/27).
