PUT COSTANZA ON IT: BIG STEIN WANTS MORE PEOPLE IN THE SEATS

Yankees Owner George Steinbrenner said yesterday that he
was disappointed in the small crowd at Yankee Stadium Tuesday
night when the team played the Royals, according to the N.Y.
TIMES. In a statement, Steinbrenner noted that the Yankees
came home "in the midst of one of the best starts in club
history to the smallest crowd of the season," 16,606, and
added, "It's hard to come to any conclusion other than the
fact that we have an outmoded stadium in a location that
people don't want to go see a game." Last night's game
against the Rangers drew 23,142, still below the team's
season average of 29,161, sixth in the AL (N.Y. TIMES, 5/14).
Steinbrenner: "I understand the weather has been bad, but we
certainly should draw good crowds with Texas this weekend and
Baltimore next week" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 5/14).
