JUDGE TO RULE WHICH BLUE JACKETS ARE MASTERS OF THEIR DOMAIN

The defense team representing Lamar Hunt rested
yesterday in the NHL Blue Jackets contract dispute "without
calling a single witness," according to Bruce Cadwallader of
the COLUMBUS DISPATCH. Attorneys for both sides also asked
Common Pleas Judge John Bessey for a "directed verdict -- a
decision without the jury." Bessey is expected to issue his
ruling on the requests today, but "also has told jurors to
return in the afternoon." Hunt has contended that local
ownership breached their contract with him by obtaining the
Blue Jackets without him. Local investors John McConnell and
John Wolfe are seeking a declaration that they "did nothing
wrong in obtaining the franchise." Hunt appeared in the
courtroom for the "first time," but "directed his attorneys
to end the case without calling a witness." Hunt's attorneys
said they will "likely appeal" some of Bessey's rulings in
Franklin County Court, while "pursuing a similar lawsuit" in
New York against the NHL and Nationwide Mutual Insurance
     (Bruce Cadwallader, COLUMBUS DISPATCH, 5/14).
