NFL ENVY? ITALY SOCCER ASSOC. WANTS MAJOR TV DEAL INCREASE

Beginning next year, Italy's Soccer Association "will
increase the price of TV rights to the national soccer
clubs' games" by 44% to US$340M per season, according to
Cecilia Zecchinelli of DAILY VARIETY. The Association
expects "about" $60M a year to come from the sale of free TV
rights, while pay TV and PPV rights will hit the "record
amount" of $280M per season (DAILY VARIETY, 4/22).
THEY HEAR THE WORLD CALLING? USA TODAY's Peter
Brewington reports that FSN will broadcast today's U.S.-
Austria soccer match at 2:30pm ET. The game was scheduled
to be shown only on Fox Sports World, which only goes to "a
few" U.S. markets. Fox hopes that by publicizing FSWo's
soccer coverage during the game, viewers "will pressure
cable systems to add the network" (USA TODAY, 4/22).
