After winning The Masters, Mark O'Meara will "probably
minimize" the number of his personal appearances but look to
"maximize the fees," according to agent, IMG's Peter Malik,
who is quoted by Don Markus of the Baltimore SUN. Sources
tell Markus that O'Meara "will increase his fee for
corporate outings from $20,000-$25,000 and as much as double
the estimated $100,000 for playing in tournaments overseas."
Rogaine will use O'Meara in a campaign that also features
Karl Malone and Spalding has discussed a "commemorative
product" around O'Meara's use of its Top-Flite ball (Don
Markus, Baltimore SUN, 4/16). Spalding took out a full-page
ad in today's Wall Street Journal congratulating O'Meara on
his victory: "Meet The New Masters Champions: Mark O'Meara
And Top-Flite Strata" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 4/16).
OFF-THE-COURSE LINKS: BusinessLinks, a multimedia
program designed to teach golfers how to use the game to
develop personal and business relationships, has been formed
by Will Rhame, James McNulty and Andy Kindle. Pat Summerall
is a spokesperson (BusinessLinks). International Sports &
Entertainment Strategies (ISES) has been hired to sign up
presenting sponsors for BusinessLinks. ISES' Tim Smith said
that the company "hopes to hook up with a TV network to
create a series of sponsored vignettes" (MEDIAWEEK, 4/12).
HOT CALLAWAY DRIVERS: In N.Y., Marcia Chambers writes
on the prevalent number of thefts of Callaway Big Bertha
products under the header, "Big Bertha Thefts Are Growing."
Chambers reports that "in response to requests from
retailers who have endured repeated theft, Callaway is now
reconsidering the use of serial numbers" (N.Y. TIMES, 4/16).
