RATINGS NOTES: In N.Y., Richard Huff reports that combined ratings for cable programming were up 14% for the first quarter of '98, and for the traditional season that began in September, cable is up 13% compared to the previous year. Conversely, during the first quarter, NBC, ABC, CBS and Fox's ratings were down 3%. For the season the Big Four are off 4% (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 3/27)....In Miami, in the past two weeks, NHL Panthers games against the Oilers and Blackhawks on SportsChannel "generated awful 0.3 ratings." The 0.3 ranked among SportsChannel's lowest ratings for game coverage in March. The Panthers are averaging a 0.8 for the season on SportsChannel (MIAMI HERALD, 3/27)....NBC is averaging a 5.1/13 for its NBA coverage this season, up 2% through the same point last year (THE DAILY).

On this week’s pod, SBJ’s Austin Karp has two Big Get interviews. The first is with TNT’s Stan Van Gundy as he breaks down the NBA Playoffs from the booth. Later in the show, we hear from ESPN’s VP of Programming and Acquisitions Tim Reed as the NFL Draft gets set to kick off on Thursday night in Motown. SBJ’s Tom Friend also joins the show to share his insights into NBA viewership trends.
