WORLD CUP BOMBING PLOT DISCOVERED; POLICE SAY THREAT REMAINS
A plot by Islamic extremists to "mount a bombing campaign against this summer's World Cup" in France has been uncovered by police, according to Conradi & Scott of the LONDON SUNDAY TIMES. World Cup brochures and a "large quantity of liquid explosives" were recovered during raids on houses in Brussels, France, which ended in the "arrest of seven suspected members of an Algerian terrorist group." Raymond Kendall, British Director of Interpol, said that the men arrested in the raid, which occurred earlier this month, "appeared to be a support group" rather "than an active operational unit." Therefore, security sources believe a threat to the World Cup "remains" (SUNDAY TIMES, 3/22).
