OILERS COULD BENEFIT INDIRECTLY FROM LOTTERY FUND PROCEEDS

Although Canadian sports teams are prohibited from
receiving lottery money, Alberta Premier Ralph Klein said
yesterday that the NHL Oilers may be able to benefit
"indirectly" from lottery fund proceeds, according to
Johnsrude & Geddes of the EDMONTON JOURNAL. Klein said that
Edmonton's new lottery board "could channel the money to the
Coliseum," home to the Oilers (JOURNAL, 3/17). Meanwhile,
Molson Breweries announced yesterday it's donating C$276,187
to the Oilers Forever Fund. From February 24 to March 13,
Molson donated C$1 from the sale of every dozen Molson
Canadian and Canadian Ice beer sold (EDMONTON SUN, 3/17).
NO COVERAGE: As a "cost-cutting measure," NPSL Edmonton
Drillers President Zach Pocklington said that he opted not
to pick up insurance for his players this season,
"unbeknownst to the players and head coach." While it is a
league requirement that all teams carry insurance,
Pocklington said "if anything happened, we'd pay out of
pocket" (Joanne Ireland, EDMONTON JOURNAL, 3/17).
