OLYMPIC NOTES: HOCKEY, MEN'S AND WOMEN'S, STILL IN THE NEWS

U.S. women's hockey team members Cammi Granato and
Sarah Tueting were guests on the "Late Show." They joined
David Letterman in eating a bowl of Wheaties from their
commemorative box. Letterman: "I mentioned this before, but
I am very fond of you and the team. I think you guys are
just great and for me, you made the Olympics" (CBS, 2/24).
MORE ON MEN'S HOCKEY: Men's hockey team assistant coach
John Cunniff speaks to Will McDonough in Boston on the
incidents surrounding Team USA. On members trashing village
rooms: "[I] think the USOC did a poor job with this
situation. ... The USOC overreacted" (BOSTON GLOBE, 2/25).
In Boston, David Nyhan calls the NHL the "biggest losers of
the Games" after CBS due to the actions of Team USA. While
the damage was "piddling," the "damage of the image of the
NHL and to the overpaid players who cavort in front of
crowds that pay $50, $70, or $100 a ticket will be longer-
lasting" (BOSTON GLOBE, 2/25). In DC, Tony Kornheiser
writes under the header, "Damaging Rooms, Reputations" and
calls for a "severe" punishment from Commissioner Gary
Bettman: "Merely paying the damages won't suffice. This is
an international incident now. It demands more than simple
restitution" (WASHINGTON POST, 2/25). CBS's David
Letterman: "Members of the United States gold medal winning
hockey team are on the show tonight. They're backstage
right now destroying their dressing rooms. Immediately
after the show, members of the U.S hockey team are headed
down to the Fashion Cafe and they're going to kick the crap
out of some supermodels. Tomorrow, the men's United States
hockey team will be appearing in a drunken brawl on the
Jerry Springer Show" ("Late Show," CBS, 2/24).
