MN GOV. ASKS MLB OWNERS TO DELAY TWINS MOVE TO NC

MN Gov. Arne Carlson asked MLB owners Thursday to delay
action on moving the Twins until the state has time to "work
out a long-term solution to keep baseball" in MN, according
to Robert Whereatt of the Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE. Carlson
"didn't give any indication of what the solution might be,"
but in a letter to Acting Commissioner Bud Selig, he said it
"may take a year or more." The letter came a day after the
collapse of another stadium-financing proposal (Minneapolis
STAR TRIBUNE, 2/20). Bernie Omann, Carlson's Chief of
Staff, said that Carlson also planned to urge Twins Owner
Carl Pohlad "to call off, or postpone, the sale of the team"
to NC businessman Don Beaver (ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS, 2/20).
URBAN ROCKS: In NC, Acting MLB Commissioner Bud Selig
was asked whether the Twins should move to Charlotte or the
Triad area if they leave Minneapolis: "I can't comment. I
really don't know the areas well enough. ... [But] I love
urban ballparks" (Greensboro NEWS & RECORD, 2/19).
