TIGERS TO PRESENT NEW PLAN AS MCHALE LOOKS TO CAMDEN YARDS

The Tigers "have scrapped plans to build a scaled-down
stadium and will present a newer, more up-to-date version to
the Stadium Authority and the Downtown Development
Authority" at public meetings today, according to Joe Falls
of the DETROIT NEWS. Team President John McHale "pushed for
the changes" to original stadium plans "after the team
received considerable criticism when it unveiled renderings
of the new park back in October." McHale said that the new
changes will include a reconfiguration of the outfield, with
higher fences; twenty more private boxes, which will "help
defray" the extra money Owner Mike Ilitch is putting into
the project; wider concourses in the lower deck and a
partial brick exterior. Assistant Wayne County Supervisor
Mike Duggan, who criticized the initial plan, said, "The
public is going to love this stadium. It's unbelievable
what McHale has done" (DETROIT NEWS, 2/15).
