ESPY HANGOVERS: WHAT WAS UP WITH THAT HAREY CARAY SKETCH?

          Monday's ESPY Awards earned a 2.2 rating, "a 28% drop
from last year," according to USA TODAY's Michael Hiestand.
Hiestand calls the show "generally digestible," but says
"Saturday Night Live" castmember Will Farrell's Harry Caray
skit was a "low point" (USA TODAY, 2/11). In N.Y., Michele
Greppi pans ESPY host Norm Mcdonald's performance and said
that some ESPY veterans said the show's attempts at humor
"was by far the most vicious yet." An ESPN spokesperson,
who called the show "very successful," added, "We recognize
that a couple of things on the show may have gone over the
line. That's the kind of risk we think you take with this
kind of show." Greppi: "We would suggest ESPN doesn't know
what kind of show it wants the ESPYs to be. But Cary Grant-
     meets-'South Park' doesn't cut it" (N.Y. POST, 2/11).
