BEFORE HEADING OFF TO NAGANO, NHL BREAKS ATTENDANCE MARK

          The NHL set a single-day attendance record on Saturday. 
     With all 26 teams playing, a total of 232,517 fans attended
     the day's games, at an average of 17,886 per game and 99.7%
     of capacity.  Twelve of the 13 games were sellouts.  (NHL).
          NHL NOTES: In Toronto, Scott Morrison reported that NHL
     VP Brian Burke has scheduled a meeting with NHL Commissioner
     Gary Bettman next week in Nagano "at which time he is
     expected to negotiate his separation from the league." 
     Morrison added that Burke will "no doubt wind up as" GM of
     the new Atlanta franchise (TORONTO SUN, 2/8)....In N.Y.,
     Larry Brooks reported league marketing people "are still
     floating the idea" of having goalies wear distinct jerseys. 
     However, the league "has ruled against" the use of fourth
     jerseys, at least for next season (N.Y. POST, 2/8).
