PADRES TASK FORCE SEES CENTRE CITY AS BEST SITE FOR BALLPARK

After "months of consideration," the Padres Task Force
on Ballpark Planning has designated Centre City East in
downtown San Diego as "the prime site for a new baseball-
only stadium," according to Barry Bloom of the SAN DIEGO
UNION-TRIBUNE. The committee's report is "expected to be
approved by the 18-member citizens task force today." The
report "does not go into detail" about how to pay for the
park, but recommends that no new sales or property tax money
is used. Padres President Larry Lucchino called the site
selection a "giant step forward" in the process, and that
the team is now "committed to building a ballpark on the
Centre City East site" (Barry Bloom, UNION-TRIBUNE, 1/29).
