CHAMPIONSHIP OVERNIGHTS: NFL TITLE GAMES OFF FROM '97

Overnight ratings showed that viewership of Sunday's
NFL Conference Championship games "tumbled," according to
USA TODAY's Rudy Martzke. NBC's 25.9 overnight for Broncos-
Steelers was off 9% from last year's 28.4 for Jaguars-
     Patriots. Fox's 27.4 for Packers-49ers fell 10%, from 30.6
     for last year's Panthers-Packers. BBDO's Steve Grubbs
called the Packers-49ers number "shocking," and added, "We
had projected a 45.0 to 45.5 rating for the Super Bowl. Now
we'll have to bring that down a point" (USA TODAY, 1/13).
MARKET-BY-MARKET: In Denver, the AFC Championship game
earned a 56.4/86 on KUSA-TV. In Pittsburgh, the game did a
51.9/79 (Dusty Saunders, ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS, 1/13). The
NFC title game scored a 56.8/80 in Milwaukee, and a 46.7/77
in San Francisco (Howard Manly, BOSTON GLOBE, 1/13).
