NYC GAMES TO OFFER TRACK ATHLETES GOODWILL, AND CASH TO BOOT
The Goodwill Games announced that $1.8M in prize money will be awarded for track and field events at next year's event, set to take place July 18-August 2 in N.Y., according to Frank Litsky of the N.Y. TIMES. All track events will have eight-person finals, and each athlete reaching the finals "will receive prize money, ranging from $40,000 for first place in five events to $500 for last place in 13 others." The $1.8M figure "does not include bonuses of $50,000 to $100,000 for a world record and smaller bonuses for lesser records" (N.Y. TIMES, 12/8). This marks the first time the Games has offered prize money (THE DAILY).
