UTAHNS UPSET OVER BEER SPONSORSHIP AT 2002 WINTER GAMES

The Utah Alcohol Policy Coalition (UAPC), along with
the support of the Utah PTA and the Utah Medical
Association, "has been pushing for some time to ban alcohol
advertising during the Olympics," according to Lisa Riley
Roche of the DESERET NEWS. The 2002 Winter Games will have
an official "malt beverage," but calling it that instead of
beer "isn't making the sponsorship more palatable to anti-
alcohol activists." SLOC CEO Frank Joklik: "It ought to be
looked at in a business light. ... It's our job. ... We have
sponsorships (that can be sold) in various categories and
this is a category that's available." Dr. George Van Komen,
who heads the UAPC: "It's something we Utahns should unite
against. This is not Utah. This is not what we stand for."

SLOC Chair Bob Garff: "The Olympics are a sporting event ...
It's not a religious event" (DESERET NEWS, 11/16).
