NFL: In L.A., Randy Harvey reported that Leigh
Steinberg is "close" to presenting the NFL with a group of
local investors that would own and operate an expansion team
at a new stadium at Hollywood Park. Steinberg: "I don't
want to be seen as the person who stopped the Coliseum from
getting pro football. ... But we have waited and waited. If
we continue to wait, our window of opportunity is going to
close and it's going to be a long time before the NFL
returns to Los Angeles" (L.A. TIMES, 11/13).
WOMEN'S HOOPS: The ABL has partnered with non-profit
organizations throughout the U.S., including the YWCA, Boys
and Girls Club and Girl Scouts, for its "ABL Bucks" program.
As part of the program, an "ABL Buck" coupon will entitle
the bearer to a $1 discount on an ABL admission and a $1
contribution to a non-profit. The "Bucks" will be
distributed by the league to participating non-profits, who
will give them to their constituents (ABL)....The WNBA
signed former ABL player Cindy Brown to a contract. Brown
will be assigned to a team for the '98 season (WNBA).
NBA: ESPN's David Aldridge: "Owners remained united
coming out of this week's Board of Governors meeting." NBA
Commissioner David Stern said that he does think the CBA
"will be reopened next spring, but said that the
reestablishment of the Labor Relations Committee is not
necessarily a rubber stamp for those who seek a new
agreement." Stern: "Maybe it's inevitable, but I'd like not
to prejudge it." NBPA Exec Dir Billy Hunter: "What the NBA
and the owners have to consider is: They've got a very good
deal now, and the question is can they get a better deal if
they blow this one up?" ("SportsCenter," 11/13).
