AS CFL SETS FOR A TOUCH OF GREY, LEAGUE ANNOUNCES $4M PROFIT

CFL Acting Commissioner & CEO John Tory said that he
expects the league to post an operating profit of "at least"
C$4M this season and that the "eight member clubs will
receive six-figure dividends after the season," according to
Grant Kerr of the CANADIAN PRESS. The league will turn a
profit because it did not have to finance teams in Montreal
and Vancouver, as it did last season. Last year, the league
lost about C$3M. Tory said that the alliance with the NFL
in marketing and promotional areas "was a huge plus" and he
will meet with NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue today.
Looking ahead, Tory said a return to the U.S. market is not
being considered, "although he didn't rule out the
possibility at a later date." He also added that the naming
of a full-time commissioner won't happen anytime soon
(CP/Toronto GLOBE & MAIL, 11/14). Tory said that the
commissioner issue is "dormant," as the team governors "like
the present setup." All eight CFL teams are "fully expected
to operate next season" (Al Ruckaber, CALGARY SUN, 11/14).
