LEAGUE NOTES

CBA: USA TODAY's Roscoe Nance previews the start of the
CBA season. The nine-team league opens its 52nd season on
Friday and "it is expanding its focus to include college
underclassman and highly regarded high school seniors." CBA
Commissioner Steve Patterson said he hopes to have a youth
development program, complete with corporate sponsorship, in
place sometime next year (USA TODAY, 11/12).
LPGA: Raycom is "in the final stages" of signing a
three-year deal with the LPGA, CA-based Twelve Bridges Golf
Club and Longs Drugs Stores to manage the Longs Drugs
Challenge from April 2-5, 1998 (SACRAMENTO BEE, 11/11).
SOCCER: U.S. Soccer subcommittee Chair Burton Haimes
said that the debut of the National Soccer Alliance (NSA)
women's pro league in '98 "is unlikely," according to USA
TODAY's Jerry Langdon. But NSA Exec Jen Rottenberg said
there still is a possibility of beginning in '98. Haimes
cited the "short window" before the spring to finalize
sponsors and establish an infrastructure (USA TODAY, 11/12).
