IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT AND ABC FEELS FINE

The anthology format of ABC's "Wide World of Sports"
will soon "taste the agony of defeat," according to Stephen
Battaglio of the HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. Beginning in January,
"Wide World of Sports" will become the "umbrella title" for
all weekend and primetime sports coverage on ABC, with the
exception of college football and "Monday Night Football."
The new "Wide World" will be broadcast from a live studio in
New York City with scores and news throughout Saturday and
Sunday afternoons. "Wide World" will also include "major
live events," including PGA golf, NASCAR and college
basketball games. Battaglio adds that "Wide World" has been
in a "serious ratings decline" this year, with the first and
second quarter numbers down 25% from '96, and although
third-quarter numbers were up 6%, the show is "believed to
be unprofitable" (HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, 9/11). Current "Wide
World" anchor Robin Roberts "is expected to be supplemented"
by other ABC hosts, such as John Saunders and Brent
Musburger (Michael Hiestand, USA TODAY, 9/11).
