FRANCHISE NOTES

Bills Owner Ralph Wilson, on "complaints" about the
team's marketing efforts: "I'd like somebody to tell me how
they go about marketing. You go about marketing by winning.
That's how you do it. A couple years ago we spent $700,000
on television, advertising the Bills and we didn't sell five
tickets. You can put up a billboard and people drive by,
but that doesn't mean they're going to go to the games.
This is sort of an anomaly, this marketing. Everybody gets
carried away with it" (BUSINESS FIRST, 8/18 issue).... NFL
Giants Co-owner Wellington Mara said there have been
"preliminary discussions" on erecting a wall along the outer
rim of Giants Stadium to honor past players and teams (N.Y.
POST, 8/22)....In Detroit, Gene Guidi writes that the fact
that Tigers Owner Mike Ilitch approved a $5M deal for closer
Todd Jones "seems to indicate he is feeling good about his
team again. It's no secret that Ilitch soured on baseball a
couple of years ago; he admitted that had he known what was
in store, he probably wouldn't have bought the team"
(DETROIT FREE PRESS, 8/22)....In St. Louis, Internet service
provider Primary Network, which handles fantasy games for
The Sporting News, Microsoft and NBC Sports, is organizing a
group to pursue a CBA expansion team. The company wants a
15-20% stake and is looking for four additional investors
(ST. LOUIS BUSINESS JOURNAL, 8/18 issue).
