LEAGUE NOTES

Will McDonough tells USA TODAY's Rudy Martzke that
Cleveland will land an expansion team in '99: "[N]o one's
moving. You'll see Cleveland get an expansion team, and
then, probably in 2001, Los Angeles will be awarded an
expansion team" (USA TODAY, 8/20)....In Detroit, Neal
Shulenburger writes on MLS, the CISL and the NPSL, as pro
soccer has been "trying throughout the 1990s to surge into
the hearts -- and pocketbooks -- of America's sports fans.
But at least at the turnstiles, they are failing" (DETROIT
NEWS, 8/20)....In Milwaukee, Acting Commissioner Bud Selig
declined to respond "specifically" to Yankees Owner George
Steinbrenner's voiced opposition to radical realignment
(RRA), but he said, "There are clubs with valid concerns,
legitimate concerns. We're working our way through that."
Selig denied reports that the plan "was stalled" (MILWAUKEE
JOURNAL SENTINEL, 8/20)....In Atlanta, I.J. Rosenberg
reports that the Braves, Mets, Reds, Dodgers, Cubs and
Giants are opposed to RRA (ATLANTA CONSTITUTION, 8/20).
