OUT OF THE COWBOYS SHADOW? RANGERS EYE 3 MILLION FAN MARK

MLB Rangers Dir of Ticket Operations Marty Schueren's
"challenge is to figure a way to squeeze an extra 100,000
fans out of what is traditionally the slowest month of the
year," as drawing 3 million fans "remains the team's one
reachable goal," according to Evan Grant of the DALLAS
MORNING NEWS. The Rangers can "count on" at least 2.82
million in paid attendance, and walk-up sales at the current
pace would produce another 50,000-plus fans over the last 17
home dates. But Grant writes that "unless the Rangers
either mount some kind of rally on the field or come up with
some creative promotions, they'll fall just short of 3
million" with September seeing the start of school year and
the football season. Rangers President Tom Schieffer:
"We've operated so long in the shadow of football, but if
you brought 3 million fans in here, it would show that there
really is an attachment. It would establish us as a
baseball town" (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 8/20).
