EXPOS' "BEST TEAM IN CANADA" CAMPAIGN IN PERIL

While the Expos has been planning to market itself to
fans, sponsors and TV execs next season as "the best
baseball team in Canada," Marty York of the Toronto GLOBE &
MAIL reports their record indicates they "are in danger" of
"losing" that status. An Expos front office source told
York that with Toronto and Montreal "probably competing in
the same division next season because of planned
realignment," the Expos felt they "could efficiently appeal
to the masses with a campaign in which they would advertise
their bragging rights within Canada." The source: "We saw
the real value of a rivalry with Toronto during our series
at the SkyDome. ... Here we were, with a payroll of only
$17-million (U.S.), beating the high and mighty Blue Jays.
... In some ways, it would be worse for us to wind up this
year with a poorer record than Toronto than if we finished
last in the NL East" (GLOBE & MAIL, 8/19).
