GOODYEAR RESTRUCTURES RACING ORGANIZATION; FEELING THE HEAT?

In "another sign that Goodyear is interested in using
racing to further generate new technology as well as to
increase name recognition," company officials announced a
"major restructuring" of its racing organization, according
to Glenn Gamboa of the AKRON BEACON JOURNAL. Goodyear will
now have a marketing manager and chief engineer assigned
"specifically" to each of the Formula One, CART and IRL
circuits. Industry observers say the move "is also a sign
that Goodyear ... takes very seriously the growing
competition in racing from Nashville-based Bridgestone
/Firestone Inc," as Goodyear's changes "come only in the
circuits" where "it faces competition from Bridgestone
     /Firestone" (AKRON BEACON JOURNAL, 8/14).
FOOD FOR THOUGHT: NC-based Food Lion and NASCAR will
team for a 14-state "Food Lion/NASCAR Stars, Cars and Cash
Giveaway" promo which will reward 30,000 winners with $3.2M
in prizes. The promo runs August 20-September 16 with daily
drawings at Food Lion. Winners are eligible for top prize
drawings that include a VIP trip to the NASCAR Winston Cup
Banquet in New York, along with $100,000 cash (Food Lion).
