FRANCHISE NOTES

It is estimated that "more than 100" Tim Duncan No. 21
Spurs jerseys have been sold in San Antonio in "a little
more than a week since they went on sale." One department
store manager speculated that Duncan "might elevate sales of
Spurs jerseys to the Dennis Rodman levels of a few years
back" (SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS, 8/14)....Orioles GM Pat
Gillick said that "he plans to return next year for the
final season of his three-year, $2.4 million contract." But
he "indicated" that his days as a GM "might be over after
that" Gillick: "There's nothing that Baltimore or [Orioles
Owner] Peter [Angelos] can do to change the way the game is.
It's the state of the game" (WASHINGTON POST, 8/15).
...Hurricanes Owner Peter Karmanos, on the estimated 3,000
season ticket sales: "I'd have loved to sell them out in the
first two weeks, but nobody felt like that would happen.
     It's a process. ... We have a feeling we'll be significantly
oversubscribed (for skyboxes) in Raleigh. Really, things
have just started to get rolling" (Raleigh NEWS & OBSERVER,
8/15). In an effort to boost the team, the Greater Raleigh
Chamber of Commerce "is chartering busses and taking local
residents" to the team's opener on October 3 (TRIANGLE
BUSINESS JOURNAL, 8/11 issue)....The Cowboys are featured in
MEN'S JOURNAL under the header "Dog Days In Dallas," and
Cowboys WR Michael Irvin is featured in ESQUIRE under the
header "Big D, Why Hast Thou Forsaken Me?" (9/97 issues).
