Mets OF Carl Everett, who is being investigated for
child abuse, "did not join the Mets" in St. Louis yesterday,
"instead staying in New York while the custody battle for
two of his children remains unsolved," according to David
Waldstein of the N.Y. POST. Mets GM Steve Phillips said
that team Owners Nelson Doubleday and Fred Wilpon were "up
to speed" on the situation, and that the team "planned no
disciplinary action on their own" until the investigation
was complete. Everett is scheduled to rejoin the team
tonight in Colorado (N.Y. POST, 8/15).
MATTHEWS LASHES OUT: The headline on the top of page
one of today's N.Y. POST reads, "Shame Of The Mets: Why Is
This Man Still In Uniform?" In his column, Wallace Matthews
writes that despite the investigation and remarks by Everett
and his wife, Linda, "the Mets remain silent publicly and
apologetic, even protective, of Carl Everett behind the
scenes." Matthews: "And where is Major League Baseball ...
[will it] step up to the plate, or has it been brushed back
so often by the players union it is too impotent to step
back in?" (N.Y. POST, 8/15).
