THE SPORTS AUTHORITY POSTS STRONG 2Q RESULTS

          FL-Based The Sports Authority (TSA) recorded record
     second-quarter sales, net income and earnings per share for
     the period ended July 27, 1997.  The company earned net
     income of $9.6M, or $.30/share, compared to $9.2M, or
     $.29/share in '96.  Sales for the period were $383M, up 16%
     from the $332M in 2Q '96.  For the six months to date, net
     income was $12.2M, or $.38/share, an 8% increase over the
     $11.2M, or $.35/share in '96.  Sales for the six months
     totaled $703M, 17% over '96 (TSA). CNBC's Sue Herera
     reported that The Sports Authority's earnings were "right in
     line with Wall Street estimates" ("Business Tonight," 8/12).
          A NEW BOSTON STADIUM? NJ-based Sneaker Stadium is
     opening its first store in Natick, MA, this week, and the
     BOSTON GLOBE's Chris Reidy writes that the "big-box" store
     "hopes it can do for athletic footwear what Staples Inc. has
     done for office supplies."  Sneaker Stadium Dir of
     Advertising & Marketing Laura Anne Williams said the company
     projects sales of nearly $150M in '97, with 60% of the
     customer base being male (BOSTON GLOBE, 8/13).
