CHICAGO TRIBUNE REPORTS HOW MJ ALMOST BECAME A KNICK

In the first of a two part series entitled "How New
York Almost Lured Jordan," the CHICAGO TRIBUNE's Sam Smith
writes the "untold story" of how Michael Jordan "almost"
left the Bulls last summer. In a "plan hatched" by Jordan's
agent David Falk, before ITT sold its interest in the team,
Jordan was to receive the Knicks' $12M salary-cap space and
"perhaps another" $15M in a separate deal as a spokesperson
"for such ITT companies as Sheraton." Smith: "Because
Jordan is such a huge commercial presence, his status was
considered unique, and the NBA was prepared to allow the
separate deal without the money counting against the Knicks'
cap." While the Bulls "argued," NBA Commissioner David
Stern's "traditional reluctance to cut" commercial
opportunities "changed the parameters" of the talks, and led
to the Bulls increasing their offer (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 8/13).
