PADRES FEEL TARGETING THE WOMEN IS SMARTER

Women are "not only talking baseball in San Diego, they
are watching it," and the Padres "are making a concerted
effort to target the female market," according to Paula
Mascari-Bott of the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE. The team has a
few programs "in place to lure women through the turnstiles
with many more planned." Figures from the "Compadres Club"
show that 43.2% of its participants are female, while the
city's population is 49.2% female. The Padres' "success in
attracting women fans is much higher than the numbers"
provided by MLB, which puts its fan base at 84% male, 16%
female. Padres VP/Marketing Don Johnson: "If we're going to
be successful as we have to be and we want to be, we have to
appeal to that 49.2% of our population." The merchandising
department added female fashions more than a year ago, and
"several" women in the organization "have provided insights"
for changes (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 8/11).
