NY INVESTOR MARIO GABELLI BUYS 5% OF ASCENT ENTERTAINMENT

          Funds "controlled" by New York investor Mario Gabelli
     said they now "hold stakes of more than" 5% in Ascent
     Entertainment Group, according to the N.Y. POST.  Gabelli
     and his associates own 5.63% or 1.7 million shares of
     Ascent, parent of the Nuggets and Avalanche, according to
     papers filed with the SEC.  The report says Gabelli paid 9
     1/2 to 12 7/16 per share for the Ascent stock.  While there
     have been reports that Ascent "may seek partners" for its
     interests in the teams, Ascent's Paul Jacobson said that
     "the Gabelli purchase is not related to the possible
     partnership and was strictly for investment."  He added that
     Ascent "would be willing to take on minority partners if
     they could add something to the company" (N.Y. POST, 8/9).
