REPORT HAS RJR LOOKING TO KEEP TIES TO NASCAR SPONSORSHIP
Published July 8, 1997
Despite a proposed ban on tobacco advertising in
sports, plans to continue R.J. Reynolds' "financial
involvement" in motor sports sponsorship "already are being
discussed behind the scenes," according to Tom Ford of the
TAMPA TRIBUNE. The "RJR Cup" or "Nabisco Cup" are "among
the possibilities reportedly being thrown around" to rename
the RJR-sponsored Winston Cup series. But McDonald's, A-B
and Sears "are rumored to be among those bidding" for title
sponsorship of the series. A source told the TRIBUNE: "A
lot of people in racing have expressed panic over the
tobacco settlement, but you can pretty much be assured RJR
is staying. It's not going anywhere" (TAMPA TRIBUNE, 7/4).
