EXPOS OWNER MAINTAINS STADIUM AT HEART OF FINANCIAL TROUBLES
Published July 8, 1997
Expos President Claude Brochu "insisted" that the team
is in Montreal "for the long haul," according to Robert
MacLeod of the Toronto GLOBE & MAIL. Brochu: "The bottom
line in baseball is a disaster everywhere and it's no
different here. It's going to be a pretty tough year for
us, but we just have to live through it." MacLeod wrote
that Brochu "insists that the team's financial problems can
be attributed to housing." Brochu: "When you're away from
the downtown core it's difficult to get people to go to the
stadium at night. ... Basically, we don't have any problems
in terms of fans. ... But our trouble ... is basically
corporate support" (Toronto GLOBE & MAIL, 7/7).
