DETROIT CABLE OPERATORS NOT LIKELY TO PASS ON NEW FOX RSN

Metro Detroit cable operators are "moving quickly" to
sign with Fox Sports Detroit in order to receive Red Wings
telecasts this fall, and PASS, which had been the area's
sole full-time sports cable provider since '84, "appears to
be in trouble as a result," according to Tim Kiska of the
DETROIT NEWS. PASS was "outbid" for Red Wings rights and
will lose its coverage of the Pistons after this season to
Fox Sports Net. That will leave PASS with only the Tigers,
"for at least two more seasons." PASS is "moving to try to
overcome" the losses, including moving from a premium
service to basic. Fox Sports Detroit will also be a basic
service and while no cable systems have signed the RSN, area
cable operators are "snapping to attention," as reps from
local cable operators MediaOne, TCI Cablevision and Comcast
are negotiating carriage (DETROIT NEWS, 7/29).
